Love the mellow sound of the cello. Recommended cello music include Jacqueline du Pre performing Elgars Cello Concerto Opus 85 with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim and Enigma Variations Opus 36 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim. CBS recording courtesy of EMI.
I also enjoy recordings of Pablo Casals playing cello Beethoven Cello Sonatas recorded by Philips.
Heinrich Schiff is another great cellist - I particularly enjoy recording of Cello Concerto in B minor by Antonin Dvorak on Phillips recording.

The Schubert Arpeggione ...there is a wonderful recording of Yo Yo Ma playing it...

And there is the MOST beautiful piece by Brahms: Der Geistliche Wiegendlied, Op 91, No 2 .. .... for alto, cello (or viola), and piano ..... it is to die for!!! There is a recording with Janet Baker, the English mezzo-soprano and someone special playing the piano but I forgot who ...(oops!) I think it is Andre Previn... (sorry) ... It is for Christmas time....
Wiegendlied is a cradle song
and Geistliche means 'holy' ..or 'sacred', 'spiritual'

i play the violin in my school orchestra and i would say that if i hadn't chosen to play the violin, the cello would be my very first choice. i love listening to the cello. i think the bass is too low and the violin and violas are too high.

Love it, but not deeply into it. I like Claude Bolling's "Suite for Cello & Jazz Piano Trio".
