Duh!!! Let it rest every now and then but don't turn it off...set it to auto, pick a temp somewhere around 72 to 76 degrees and don't touch it once you do. if you do decide to turn off your a/c make sure that when you power it back up its not at the hottest part of the day...otherwise it will over work itself trying to make things cooler and burn out your motor or expel excess freon.Take advantage of a cool breeze by opening up a window or fanning yourself with a handheld device, whether it be battery operated or self propelled.

Certainly you'll get various answers, and suggestions. One might assume that finding a comfort range and leaving a thermostat set in that range will save energy by not keeping the home too cold, wilol still being acceptable to you, Indoors ty wearing light weight clothing), and having the equipment run all the time, and some might say turn it off certainly when it isn't needed, and on when it is.

Either way the cost difference may be negligible? The greater issue regarding efficiency and cost saving is how well your house is insulated and sealed. Obviously if not well, then the AC may run longer, work harder, and cost more.

"REST" isn't exactly accurate. When the system reaches it's preset temp. it effectively "rests" on its own. It's likely an oven, clothing dryer, water heater, will use as much if not more than an efficient AC unit.

To best help the system however, you probably should check insulation, caulk windows, keep blinds or drapes closed on the East and West sides, during peak Sunlight hours, keep major cooking or appliances that use energy and produce heat, to use when the outside temps are cooler.IE: no offense but a microwave need not strictly mean fast food freezer meals, uses far less energy, and produces far less heat than an oven.

Use the air conditioner only as you need it. Depending on the size of the unit it still pulls alot of power. You have the compressor which pulls alot of power especially on start up. In addition you have 2 fans that are using power ( except window units ) if you have a central unit set the thermostat to where you feel comfortable. I learned years ago to set the thermostat to 75 degrees and I use fans to keep my house cool.

Turning it on and off will use more energy since the unit has to re-cool the entire house instead of just maintaining a constant temp. If you will not be home, turn the thermostat up a few degrees. This will maintain some cooling but not allow the house to become hot.

If you just set the temp to whatever is comfortable to you, then if will kick on and off by itself. If it stays on constantly then you could have a thermastat problem and should try replacing it first. If that doesn't solve the problem then call a heating and air company.

set the thermostate at a comfy level at 78 or higher or lower to your taste and try not to turn down or up as it takes a long time to cool than to heat up

damn, if you have to ask this question, i am worried about the state off this world in ten years. Air con uses huge amounts of energy. Did you know if you hang sheets over your windows (open0 and wet them it cools you down?

You need to shut it off when you don't use it. If you have it on all the time it will make your electric bill HUGE and contribute to global warming.
