First, what you heard is the ridiculous thoughts of a totally uninformed idiot that hasn't a clue about fish or fish keeping. Trust nothing from that source or any other that agrees goldfish always die fast.

Keep your goldfish in a filtered aquarium. Feed it only whet it can eat in about 3-4 minutes 1-2 times a day and clean the gravel with a gravel siphon and change 25% of the water once a week. That really pretty much all it takes to keep your fish reasonably healthy and happy.

Know to that most fancy goldfish will grow to be about 6-8" long not counting the tail and will need a tank of about 15-20 gallons to be comfortable.

Here's a little more info about keeping an aquarium and some info on keeping goldfish.

Best of luck and welcome to the hobby!

The oldest living Goldfish to date was a goldfish named Tish owned by Hilda and Gordon Hand of Thirsk, N. Yorkshire, England. Tish lived for 43 years after being won at a fairground in 1956.

Goldfish can have lifespans up to 20+ years if they are fed a varied diet and housed in exceptional water conditions. They need to be in tanks that are not overcrowded. They need sufficient swimming room and do best if they are kept with their own types.

Just do lots and lots of research on your new Goldfish. I am not familiar with these types of fish, I have always kept bettas as pets. But with any animal you should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do your research. That way you know how to give them the best life possible and you can understand why it behaves the way it does. And the chance that you are going to do something that may unintentionally harm or kill it is greatly reduced when you research the animal first.

clean the bowl, and don't feed it too much. and if the fish starts to look like it's about to die, use mineral bottled water instead of water from the faucet

Not really anything you can do. It might last a little while, but don't expect it to last a long time.
