solution? I personally think this society over prescribes and over uses prescription pills. Face it, we are a pill popping nation of over diagnosed whiners. All this ADHD, ADD, Aspergers, a pill for this, a pill for that. I've got the so called symptoms of ADHD, but I would never take a pill to change who I am. Granted, some prescription pills are necessary, such as heart medicines and diabetes etc. We are making the pharmaceutical companies rich which in turn makes politicians rich. Don't you people see this?

People, I do think there are people that legitimately needing pills. I just think there are a lot of docs who over prescribe, and a lot of people who think a pill is gonna fix there current situation. We are using pills as coping mechanisms.

I think Americans, for the most part, live unhealthy lifestyles and our bodies are reacting. I think many of the ailments we suffer from can be cured/relieved by eating better and excercising.

We are all living in fast motion. We are overworked, underpaid, overstressed . . .

I think prescriptions are necessary at times. But presciption meds are making some rich people even more money, while the meds cause crazy side effects and sometimes even more severe problems including death.

They approve the meds so quickly now - money, money, money!!!! They do not truly now the long term (and some short term) effects of these meds.

For example, I am sitting home with my 12 year old daughter who has the chicken pox. When she was an infant, the law required that she get the immunization. Back then, they said the vaccine lasts a life time. Now they know it does not - this is only 10-12 years later. I would have much rather opt not to have had her vaccinated and have her get this illness years ago when she was younger. This way her body could NATURALLY build up antibodies! The doctor also told me yesterday that because she was vaccinated she would have a mild breakout - SHE IS COVERED FROM HEAD TO THE BOTTOMS OF HER FEET!!!!!

This is far from some of the extreme cases of medicine not being tested long enough to be approved. Now a days it takes a few months to approve a med - the faster the FDA approves the meds - the more money the drug company pays them!!!!!!!!!

I went off on a tangent. Bottom line I feel that American's do not have the time to truly take care of themselves the way we should - we are working to put gas in our cars to drive to a job where we are underpaid and to stores to buy overpriced products. We do not have the time to excercise and eat healthy, so our government gets rich giving us bandaids in the pill form to make us feel better - not to cure us - and often the pills make things worse.

Thanks for listening!

You have that right. Sure some people actually do need pilss for ADD, depression, etc. etc. But to advertise Zoloft and such on TV? Do you feel down........ are you that slow little marshmellow that is slow but after a pill zips along and is the head of the crowd of other bouncing marshmellows? I think a lot of times someone could just change their life, outlook or the way they deal w. things. But that may take work and its so much easier to take a pill rather than focus on the root issue.

In the US the whole Ritalin thing was attacked when it was realized that if a kid has the slightest behavioral problem they would just drug the kid up. In England they passed serious laws about prescribing the Prozac type drugs. This was after they found serious levels of them in the tap water in London or whatnot. This is because when you take a drug it is not all used by your body and you pass some when you urinate...... and after water treatment and such it finds its way into the water supply. England realized that this is way over prescribed and for sure you see no drug commercials on TV there.

So yes there are people who see this...... that we have become in the US a bunch of whiners.

I agree that some people abuse pills, but there are mental disorders that cannot be cured unless a pill is taken. Some people can get through anxiety and depression with therapy, but others, such as myself have exhausted all options and need meds. I believe it's the doctors' faults not the patients. Doctors push the pills because I think they get some sort of incentive for doing so. I was prescribed an anti-depressant by a psychiatrist. Yes I was depressed, but my anxiety was WAY worse. Well he prescribed me an anti-depressant that actually increases anxiety. Needless to say, I was pretty mad about the whole situation. I think people just need to determine on their own if medication is the right thing for them... not let a doctor do it for them.

We have reached a point where our first thought for nearly any ill is to want to pop a pill. I agree that a lot of that is due to the fact that we have grown accustomed to instant gratification rather than having to wait for results to be achieved in other ways. Yes, I believe that medications are over-prescribed, but I also think that it's a blessing that we have these meds available for those people who truly do suffer from various physical and emotional or mental problems. They have been given a new chance at life through these drugs. I just wish that the doctors had the time and a more sure-fire method to discern who truly needs to take them.

I so see where your coming from dude. I also understand some people need these pills or there drugs to treat there issues or there problems. Alot of people get a bum rap and get labeled when there as young as kids and there parents go for it and its like there hands get tied by our crappy system. Then its like down the road the kids being on these pills or drugs can and will come back to haunt them. In one way or another. Law related and its sad. Cause they can not fend for themselves. Im glad my parents fought for me all the way and didnt let let those bastard docters take advantage of me when I was little. If anyone reads my response unless theres something wrong with there kids dont let them be prescribed any drugs unless you feel they need it or if something is very wrong. America needs to focus on there youth more then ever now. And find its leaders instead of having these other countries do better then us.

We've become a nation of people who want the instant fix for EVERYTHING. We, also, have become brainwashed into taking a pill for everything as well.

When the advertisements start listing the side-effects, I wince. I'm very cautious about what medications I might have to take, and always ask if there isn't a way I can correct any problems through diet or lifestyle change first.

While some problems may be "over diagnosed", I can;t deny the ability of a small pill to help people get better, whether they have depression, add, or schizophrenia. And I've never heard of a pill for Asperger's. I thought that was like autism...?

Its unfortunate how far too many people are quick to trust a healthcare professional as if they are God and incapable of making mistakes. Many healthcare professionals are solely into allopathy and do not look into alternative medicines in many cases. Alternative medicine is by far safer than any prescription drug, but I think if people have never been exposed to it in their lives and if their trustworthy healthcare practitioners do not reccommend them, they are not interested and automaticaly assume they will not work, even though they have no knowledge whatsoever on the subject.

I wouldn't say there is a natural remedy for all serious medical conditions, b/c although I know there are some, I wouldn't know yet about alternative medicine for EVERY serious medical problem (I'm still learning myself). Yet there are many alternative remedies for things such as headaches, migraines, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiovascular health, weight loss, allergies, ADHD, Acne, nausea, ear infections, the common cold, the Flu, GERD, even some forms of cancer-the list goes on.
Before anyone attempts to discredit me, allow me to explain how I was raised on alternative medicine and always had success with it, therefore you cannot tell me that alternative medicine does not work .
And I continue to use it now, not only for myself but for my spouse and children as well.
And we have experienced so much success with alternative medicine. I wouldn't go as far as saying that I am completely close-minded to using prescription drugs, as long as they are safer than most, but I opt for an alternative remedy first.

You're my new favourite person. I haven't gone to a doctor in over three years. Only because I know what they'll say. Take these and get some sleep. Doctors don't even know how to listen to patients any more. They just look for general symptoms and give what should do the trick.

A friend of mine died that way. He had cancer. But the doctor didn't listen to his complaints of pain and didn't do any tests. Instead he just put checks in the box that led to the conclusion my friend had an ulcer. So he was given meds to help an ulcer. In fact, it caused the cancer, that could have been removed in more than enough time to save him to explode and within a month, my friend was gone.

I trust cops more than I trust doctors. And I trust drug dealers more than I trust cops. Get my drift.

I agree with you. But if you have ADHD like my nephew does then you would need a drug to help it. He can't even go to school with out his meds. We are a family that didn't believe in those type of drugs until my nephew turned 3....woow~!! Crazy times! He failed kindergarden because he couldn't sit still long enough to listen. He was getting in trouble soooo much it was stupid. And he couldn't hold a conversation with you and still can't unless he takes his meds. You could be talking to him then he would start doing something else like jumping on the bed screaming or just doing something silly.
I'm not fighting your point though. In some cases kids don't even have ADHD and doctors medicate them just because their parents say they are hyper.....Antidepressants are used to loosely too. You can't tell me that millions of people need these drugs! Depression is something everyone faces...We don't need drugs to make it better. We need to change our lives to make it better. The only depression that should be treated is that, that is caused by a chemical imbalance.
