Try taking the doors off of the refridgerator. Can you remove the handrail from the stairs?

If your just getting rid of it take it apart as much as you can and then try it. If you use it then you'll have to leave it there or redo the stairway.
Where theirs a will, there's a way. Dont disconnect any of the lines to the pump in it. Pull the motor and all out at the same time.
This is so you don't release freon in your house and atmosphere. After you remove all that you can lay it on it's side and put some weight on it rocking it top to bottom.
If you have any windows down there measure them to see if it will go that way.
Good Luck at least.
I have a queen bed up my stairway and the box springs are to high to move it downstairs. I had to remove the first 10 stairs to get it up

Have you tried turning it 90'?..Ha..just playin'...It would be counter-productive for whomever remodeled the basement to re-frame and narrow the already existing stairwell;so, it probably got down there through the same precarious avenue that now impedes its exit...If a door casing at the foot of the stairs was installed, and that is what is too narrow for the move: dissect it from the base-board...gently pull it off the sheet-rock w/ a slender pry-bar and hammer, and try to keep it in one piece...

we had the same dilemma a 14 years ago. the fridge was there before the basement was finished, and was impossible to get out without doing major damage to the door ways and stairwell. after consulting with companies that pick up appliances, we found out that they will not remove it if it will cause damage to the house. the fridge is still there, and makes a wonderful storage cupboard. we removed the door and custom built shelves to fit inside. it now stands between the washer and dryer and holds all the cleaning and laundry supplies!!

Take the door off and it'll be smaller and lighter.
Also, pull out the old shelves and anything else to make it lighter.
There has to be some way that it got into the basement, so the door thing should work to get it through the doorway. If not, look for other things that can be taken off.

really.
you will need a recripricating saw and cut it into pieces.
sorry for you
this is a real hard job.
Or can you make it an object of art in the basement.
really.
The saw is going to be a real hardship.
Good luck to you

Call an appliance store or somebody in the classifieds that offers free removal of appliances and leave it up to them!
