Look at some of the questions asked in this section. Are they trying to insult or secretly trying to 'come out'. Another area that experiences this is the Gay & Lesbian Switchboards. Why would a heterosexual person go to all the trouble to find the number to call with abusive messages.

It's because a lot of them are bullies as per the definition of anyone who harasses, insults or demeans another person or group of people.
I doubt many would come to this section to secretly come out.
Some just come to vent on everything and, as recently seen, can attack gays, lesbians and transsexuals as well as being racist in the smae breath.
I hope everyone has read the new community guidelines because I think Yahoo! Answers has listened to some of our concerns from our submissions, and given us an easy way to identify how a question or answer is in violation.
I'm in a funny position here since I am technically straight now as a transman, but I came from the Lesbian community and am still a strong advocate for our rights, and I think this is my section too...where I can share my knowledge and experience.

i think they may be secretly questioning their own sexuality

my opinion is formed from experience.. one of my friends and i got really really drunk one night and well.. got very close and she admitted to of going into a lot of gay website and reading a lot of gay fantasy stories.

i have told no one about this because i don't want anyone to know what we did as much as she does.

but out of all of my friends (who are heterosexual) she's the only one that says things like "eww GOD that is so disgusting" when we come across two girls dancing on each other at clubs
or just lesbian and gay topics in general she is the ONLY person who openly pours negativity upon the subject.
and i really think she is only doing it because she's trying to convince herself that "it's disgusting" by saying it..
or trying to convince others that she is totally straight (in which i know for a fact that she's not) when all in all, no one even thinks she's gay or cares.

people that are nice and secure with their sexuality don't get EXTREMELY upset and persuasive that their not when you ask them.

i was just joking with one of my guy friends and was like "you look like you could be bi"
and he was like "no.. i'm not"
and that's all he said.. just a sincere .. no i'm not.
and so it was so easy to believe that he wasn't.
but if he would have been overly "no i'm not omg how could you think that? that's so disgusting" etc etc etc and not drop it for the rest of the day.
then i would have thought he was.

I think your other respondents have picked out the two main reasons : (1) Some abusers are dealing with suppressed homosexuality and (2) Some aren't but just like harassing others. There's a kind of disinterested cruelty that selects anyone who can be hurt.

Could be that they are trying to understand the differences
and be more tolerant. It hasn't been too long that these things
were even allowed to be discussed in public, so be as understanding of them as they seem to be trying to be understanding of the gay culture. Best wishes

I suggest that there are insensitive folks of all types of sexual orientation just like there are fine folks of all types. Some people gain satisfaction in inflecting suffering. It is my desire that all humans have compassion for each other and that all suffering will end. Will this occur? It is possible but not probable.

For the very same reason that so many "straight" men beat up gays - 'cause their latent homosexual tendencies frighten them so much, they'll do anything to not be perceived as gay themselves.
Shakespeare said it best: "Me thinks (s)he doth protest too much."

Because they want a homophobic laugh. Or they are confused and are testing it for when they really want to talk to someone.

They wouldn't. A self hating gay person would.
