I got a s reg fiat punto, if that helps. but when im driving sometimes I can go in first and second easy but most of the time it just wont go in so I have the force it kinda hard which scares me.

any ideas??? and please dont say take it to a garage because I am planning on, but Im asking on here so if its serious I wont drive it until I take it to the garage, thanks!!

As others told you in your 1st answer, its the clutch.

When you press the peddle down it allows the gear linkage to move effortlessly from 1 gear to the next. When a clutch fails it can go in two main ways....

One way it can stop you selecting gears, this is usually the result of the plates sticking or not opening correctly.

the other is when the plates are worn out, the biting point is at the top of the peddle and when you select a gear and lift the peddle nothing happens exept a reving engine.

The problem you describe sounds like the first, plates sticking or just faulty.

OK if you haven't got any strange or new noises coming from your car when you try to change gear and you have no problems selecting 3rd,4th ,5th and Reverse ,then, as one or two have already suggested,I'd suspect the gear linkage, probably a worn bush or joint,as 1st and 2nd gear would use the same linkage/joint if it was worn then it would effect them both leaving the others to engage smoothly.I've come across gear selection problems before on different cars and have often found the gear linkage to be the cause of the problem, and I used to work for a Ford parts supplier, and we used to supply a very large number of gear linkages to the dealers every month, so it's quite a common fault.Hope this helps.:0)

Linkage. Get a pal to wiggle the gear stick and jump underneath. You should find the linkage start where the pedal comes through the bulkhead. Your car doesn't have clutch fluid! It's on a cable! It'll be that the bushes are gone. Try this first, with a bit of dirt and some cheap parts you could solve this problem yourself. Even if it doesn't fix this problem, they'll probably need replacing anyway.

Sounds like the linkage on yer shifter might be bent or loose. Does it go into gear easier if you let out on the clutch a little bit, while pushing on the shifter?
Did people not ntice, that you had a clutch. I keep seeing all this stuff about checking yer fluid and filter. Standard trannys don't have fluid and filters...lol

right dose your clutch touch the floor without you pressing it down or is there pressure there at all or little pressure it should be 4inch clearance between floor and pedal (remember that the clutch cable could be worn and causing not to pull fully you can try to tight it all you need is two 10mm spanner use-lay)if theres pressure but not much/clearance is low between floor and pedal then it be your friction plate and pressure plate that's gone or your shaft bush/worning,clutch release bearing that is gone.or clutch master cylinder gone cant rely say until i see it .but that's not option,so best thing is to do is to make sure you have brake fluid in your reservoir because you transmission runs with the same fluid as you brakes.and check if you have transmission oil in the transmission, but its not easy to check that .from experience i would say it be you clutch plate and friction plate that is gone.
its safe to drive but get it fixed soon as possible.

The Transmission Fluid level may be low. You could get it checked out at a Service Centre/Station.
If your car is due for the regular service, one of the items on the check list is Transmission Fluid check, and top up.

Could be a simple linkage problem with a loose mounting bolt between the shifter and transmission.

ADDED: Does the shifter feel "sloppy"? (too much play)

its probably the gear linkage bushes worn,Fiat have an unusual selection method---not very precise and difficult when worn
