What voters rejected was that the Congress was increasingly drifting from Republican values, i.e., more government spending (not less), paying only lip-service to protecting the borders, not being aggressive ENOUGH in Iraq, etc. It was NOT that people had come around to embrace Democrat ideals that lost the election, it was that they were disgusted that Congress was NOT embracing Republican ideals enough that lost it.

I think it had a lot to do with the culture of corruption. The Dems convinced a lot of people the republicans were all corrupt, at least that is what happened in Ohio.
