I don't think anyone would ever make a Calvin and Hobbes movie.
Bill Watterson stopped drawing the strip for two main reasons--he didn't want the strip to become repetitive and he didn't want his characters exploited. He refused to have any merchandise made with Calvin and/or Hobbes on it and the persistence of prospective toy-makers, t-shirt producers, etc.
While I'm disappointed that there are no t-shirts or stuffed Hobbes tigers for people to have, I respect his decision.
Hypothetically, if it was made into a show and/or movie anyway, I think it would make a better TV show. It would HAVE to be animated, and with Watterson's help to keep Hobbes awesome.
There's not enough plot to make a movie, but the little plots (when Hobbes gets lost, when Calvin doesn't get invited to Susie's party, the Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs beanie, etc.) would make decent TV episodes--and when they'd run out of ideas, they would have to stop. I would be so sad if Calvin and Hobbes became an inane, stupid comic because they had to fall back on unoriginal ideas.

I was/am a huge fan of Calvin and Hobbes, reading the strip from junior high through college. That said, I'm firmly against the idea of a movie. The main reason is Hobbes. He functions well within a comic strip, but within a film it would be extremely awkward seeing him shift from being Hobbes to being a stuffed tiger.
The question of whether Hobbes was real or just a part of Calvin's wild imagination was always at the edge of the reader's mind, but quickly dismissed by how Watterson ingeniously laid out the strip. Any filmmaker, however talented, would ruin the heart of the series by having to deal with Hobbes.
Bill Watterson has always been firmly against any live-action/animated series because of that exact point. Although I dearly miss the characters and would be thrilled to see them again, I'd never want to see them in any other medium except for Bill Watterson's drawings.

i'm prepared on Calvin & Hobbes, i clearly doubt that they're going to ever make a action picture out of it, different than accessible an lively one, mostly because of the fact invoice Watterson is so vehemently adversarial to extra commericalization of his artwork. "different than for the books, 2 sixteen-month calendars (1988–1989 and 1989–1990), and training with Calvin and Hobbes,[5] very nearly all Calvin and Hobbes merchandise, alongside with T-shirts besides because of the fact the ever-present stickers for vehicle rear homestead windows which depict Calvin urinating on a enterprise's or activities team's call or variety, is unauthorized. After possibility of a lawsuit alleging infringement of copyright and trademark, a number of the sticky label makers replaced Calvin with a distinctive boy, whilst different makers disregarded the priority. Watterson wryly commented "I for sure miscalculated how established it could be to coach Calvin urinating on a Ford variety."[sixteen] some valid specific products have been produced, alongside with promotional programs to sell the strip to newspapers, yet those have been by no ability bought outright." "Watterson did contemplate animating Calvin and Hobbes, and has expressed admiration for the artwork variety. In a 1989 interview interior the Comics magazine, Watterson states: “ in case you seem on the previous cartoons via Tex Avery and Chuck Jones, you will see that there are a number of stuff single drawings only won't be able to do. Animators can get away with dazzling distortion and exaggeration [...] because of the fact the animator can administration the dimensions of time you spot something. the unusual exaggeration somewhat has time to register, and the viewer doesn’t contemplate the dazzling license he's witnessed. In a sketch, you only prepare the highlights of action — you won't be able to prepare the accumulation and launch... or a minimum of no longer without slowing down the %. of each and everything to the factor the place it relatively is like watching man or woman frames of a action picture, wherein case you have probably misplaced the consequence you have been attempting to realize. In a sketch, you are able to recommend action and time, besides the shown fact that it relatively is totally crude whilst in comparison with what an animator can do. I relatively have a actual awe for stable animation.[12]"
