If I was 137 years old, I wouldn't be baiting my own hook.

First let him try, just watch him out of the corner of your eye and see if he needs your help. and even if he does just casually go over and maybe be telling him about something and take it and bait it or tell him you wanted to show him a new thing you learned. Grandpas are proud, if he has arthritis and can't bait he may just want you to do it or you could get something like power bait that he could do.

Ohhh! I want to go fishing!!
Yes, he'll get mad and he'll smack you and say he can do it himself he may be old but he ain't dead and then he won't stop talking about for hours.
I can bait my own hook but I can't touch the fish. The fish are really gross. Worms are good.. fish are bad.. but I love to go!!

It depends on the individual, some like it and others feel that their not old and don't need help, some older women actually get mad and wave you away, so just follow your instincts, if he seems to need help ask, and then go from there.

Oh let him try, if you see him struggling, just tell him, that bait is kinda slippery, and offer to help him. He may be older, but remember, he is still a man, and you don't want to hurt his pride. Have fun, catch a biggun!

If you see he is needing help, then offer, but don't just take over and do it.
Or tell him you want him to watch how you do it and then it will get done without the asking.

Do the first one, just to "Show him how well he taught you" and if he raises a stink, leave him alone. If he's anything like my grandpa, even if he can't do it on his own, he would refuse to admit it or let you help him.

I sense that you're meaning something else but I have no clue as to what it is. Sorry, under those circumstances, I can't help.

First, let him try to himself. Then, ask politely if you can help him.
