NAT - network address translation is used in routers for conversion between local addresses and internet addresses.
If you are connected to a router you probably have an IP address like 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.x etc
These are non routable local area addresses. When you go to the internet to a website, that website will have a "public" or routable address. Just like your router will normally have a routable address from your ISP. The job of translatting traffic from the routable to non routable address is called NAT.
You can also just do a Google search for netwok address translation, or NAT to find out the entire details.

You will find these in any proxy server you use, usually, to access the internet. You will also see them in your router (linksys, netgear etc) which present a single IP address to the provider but do the translation so you can connect several computers to use that single broadband connection
