My office manager keeps buying his assistant large goldfish for this tank. I keep objecting and they keep dying. I want to help her! She's about to give up on tank. I am thinking 1 Beta.

A single male betta will work in a 5 gallon with room for a few other fish as well.

2-3 pygmy cory catfish are always great in a 5 gallon.

small tetras like neons and glowlights will do well in a 5 gallon. you could easily keep up to 10-12 of them with regular water changes assuming the tank is filtered.

Croaking gourami, killifish, a group of 6-7 male guppies, all of these will do quite well in a 5 gallon again assuming proper care and maintenance.

1 Male Betta would work fine. 5 White Clouds are hardy and do not need a heater. Either way make the tank look nice, a small piece of driftwood and for ease of use some fake plants, something covering the back of the tank. Black or really dark paper and some tape works. I really appreciate you trying to help and encourage someone to stay in the aquarium hobby. A goldfish should never be put in such a tiny tank.

Goldfish grow waaaay too big for a 5 gallon tank. Try getting a school of 5 neon tetras to brighten the tank up a little.

bettas do well in 5 gallon tanks, and guppies, mollies, and tetras. make sure to check the tank, see if everything is working correctly. these goldfish might be dying because of a problem with the tank

1 Betta sounds good.

Goldfish cannot be kept in such small tanks.
