I have just started landscaping an area in front of my house and it needs to be leveled off. However, I'm not sure how to measure the amount of dirt that I will need. Everyone I ask either wants to know how many tons or how many cubic yards. How do I figure this out? The area is approx 6 feet in length by 4 feet wide and about 1 foot deep. Any ideas? Thanks!

Cubic feet can be turned into cubic yards and then if someone is real smart they can figure how many ton's.
6X4X1= 24 cubic feet
or
8 cubic yards
or approximately 8 bags of top soil. Bags are 1 cubic yard at walmart
Roughly 2 3/4 tons
then if you need to know how many tons of dirt
1 ton pickup can hold 3 cubic yards, slightly rounded, but product weight must be considered. ... How much does a yard of product weigh? ...

I hope you haven't already ordered your fill based on the other fellow's calculations. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, not three. You need less than a cubic yard.

a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet and since 6x4x1 equals 24 cubic feet 1 cubic yard is all you need don't worry about weight
