The Bird and The Word By The Used

do you have a specific song in mind, or did you want people to help?

read the lyrics:
He wears his heart
safety pinned to his backpack
His backpack is all that he knows
Shot down by strangers
whose glances can cripple
the heart and devour the soul

All alone he turns to stone
while holding his breath after death
Terrified of whats inside
to save his life he crawls
like a worm from a bird
crawls like a worm from a bird

Out of his mind the way
pushes him whispering
must have been out of his mind
new day delusions are
pushing this out of his head
maybe out of his mind

All alone he turns to stone
while holding his breath after death
Terrified of whats inside
to save his life he
crawls like a worm from a bird
crawls like a worm from a bird

All he knows
If he can't relieve it it grows
and so it goes
he crawls like a worm
crawls like a worm from the bird

Out of his mind the way
pushes him whispering
must have been out of his mind

All alone he turns to stone
while holding his breath after death
Terrified of whats inside
to save his life he crawls
like a worm from a bird
crawls like a worm from a bird

All alone
he's holding his breath after death
Terrified to save his life
he crawls like a worm
Crawls like a worm from a bird
crawls like a worm from a bird
crawls like a worm from a bird
crawls like a worm
crawls like a worm
crawls like a worm from a bird

You should check out the song "Asylum" by Supertramp. Several people have mentioned Pink Floyd and it's true. I would say that "Dark Side of the Moon" is an album that has several references to mental illness, especially the song "Dark Side of the Moon"

Many Supertramp Songs are quite psychological. Nirvana songs are written with someone with a mental illness. All Apologys is one the Kurt has depression and apologies for his own existance. Also Offspring has a few too.

Welcome Home (sanitarium) by METALLICA. ON THE "MASTER OF PUPPETS" CD. So many great songs on that album, back when they really rocked their asses off!!!

WELCOME HOME (SANITARIUM)
Welcome to where time stands still
No one leaves and no one will
Moon is full, never seems to change
Just labeled mentally deranged
Dream the same thing every night
I see our freedom in my sight
No locked doors, no windows barred
No things to make my brain seem scarred

Sleep, my friend, and you will see
That dream is my reality
They keep me locked up in this cage
Can't they see it's why my brain says “rage”

Sanitarium, leave me be
Sanitarium, just leave me alone

Build my fear of what's out there
Cannot breathe the open air
Whisper things into my brain
Assuring me that I'm insane
They think our heads are in their hands
But violent use brings violent plans
Keep him tied, it makes him well
He's getting better, can't you tell?

No more can they keep us in
Listen, damn it, we will win
They see it right, they see it well
But they think this saves us from our hell

Sanitarium, leave me be
Sanitarium, just leave me alone
Sanitarium, just leave me alone

Fear of living on
Natives getting restless now
Mutiny in the air
Got some death to do
Mirror stares back hard
Kill, it's such a friendly word
Seems the only way
For reaching out again
