my music plays on windows media,but i cant even watch a dvd either

If you can play a normal CD but can't run a DVD disc, then there's a high chances that the DVD burner drive is malfunctioning.
Both CD and DVD uses different read/write head, so it is possible to have the CD working flawlessly but DVD not working at all. This could meant that your DVD read/write head is malfunctioning.
If it's still under warranty, you can RMA it. But if not, then you're better off getting a new DVD burner. They are cheap these days.
If you wants to comfirm it to be the drive hardware malfucntion, you can just put it a different, working DVD drive and your PC should run perfectly fine with cds or dvds.

make sure that you have a software like nero to burn and powerdvd or intervideo DVD to play dvd's
