Gila monsters are hearty lizards and do well if the temperature and humidity are right and they have enough habitat to survive in.
I'm not sure what you mean by a "strange" environment. Is this denoting two different patches of desert 50 miles apart or a patch of desert in one place and a tropical rain forest in another?
As another poster noted, gila monsters are a protected species, so don't ever get caught with one. Arizona has very strict rules governing its native wildlife.

Gila Monsters are awesome little creatures, and are quite hardy. They require a desert atmosphere, so you would need to keep its habitat hot and dry.
My advice is to leave the Gila Monster alone. They are protected as an endangered species, not to mention the fact that they are poisonous, and just one mistake can either kill you or make you WISH you were dead.
please don't try to domesticate this animal!

The best thing to do with a Gila Monster is to call animal control or your local wildlife officials, especially if you live in Arizona as the Gila Monster is a protected species and it is against the law to basically do anything with them.
Let the professionals do the job right. :)
