McAfee, is junk. You don't say if the problem is with antivirus or antispyware. There are alot better programs free, suggest you remove McAfee.

If you prefer not to pay and wish to have a free antivirus program download the free AOL Active Virus Shield, powered by Karpersky engine Russia.

Antispyware I use three. You can only use one antivirus program or you will have serious conflict with your system.

Superantispyware, known to find what all other anitspyware will miss. http://www.superantispyware.com

A2Squard Malware out of Austria. Download their free version and you will be protected from, rogue dialers, worms, malware, keyloggers, trace spyware and rouge cookies.

AdAware SE Personal out of Sweden. This antispyware company has been around since computers became commerical. In June of this year they will come out with a brand new version. Right now it is beta testing. Download their free home for personal use. http://www.lavasoft.com

All of these program I have listed for you use little or no resources.

Hi Mike,

You may want to try to execute a "repair" or a "reinstall" for your McAfee AV product to ensure all the components are in tact and working properly. You may initiate this from within the Control Panel by choosing the "Add/Remove Programs" icon (in Windows 2000/XP/2003), or the "Programs and Features" icon (in Windows Vista).

If your McAfee program was originally installed from a CD or DVD, have that disk handy for when the reinstallation or repair process prompts you for it.

If the above process does not solve the problem, I'd suspect that you may have a virus. Many viruses try (and succeed) to disable functionality of your AV/Spyware protection software, and so, you might want to err on the side of caution and utilize a FREE online AV & spyware scan via your internet browser. I recommend either McAfee's own "Free Scan": http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp , or "HouseCall" by Trend-micro: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ .

At least, by using this option, you'll know one way or another if the cause is virus-related or not.

If you need further help or advice; feel free to IM or email me.
Good luck to you. :o)
