First off, don't be nervous. That's how the lie detector works. It picks up on the smallest changes in a humans homeostatic state. There's nothing physical you can do to "cheat" the lie detector. The best way to do it, is mentally. If you don't think you are lying, it won't think you are lying. I know it sounds kind of new ageish, but it works. Believe every single word that comes out of your mouth. Say to yourself you are telling the truth. Spend the day before saying your side of the story over and over again to yourself until you come to believe it as truth. Don't act nervous, don't drink any coffee or caffeine before, eat a good breakfast so you're not hungry, and just relax.... Or you could spend 20 years learning to control your heart rhythm like the Tibetan monks.

I didn't know a person could be forced to take a lie detector test. I thought they could ask you to do it, but not actually force you to. Maybe I was wrong. Anyway, if you are nervous about taking the test make sure you get that fact on the record first off because if you get results you consider false, that might help to make the results inadmissible as evidence. You supposedly can fool a lie detector test if you actually believe what you are saying, even if what you are saying is false. You might want to practice or rehearse what a lie detector test would be like. I think they start off asking some easy base line questions to see how you respond to easy questions, like your name, address, etc, but then hit you suddenly with a series of "meat and potatoes" questions--did you see...did you...etc. You can kind of rehearse it in your mind, meditate about it as you are drifting off to sleep to make yourself more comfortable or prepared for the actual test. But if you can get out of doing it, that might be the best course of action of all.

Yes, you can beat a lie detector. In fact, it is one of the training techniques taught at two of the organizations I consult with.
However, in your particular instance, it sounds like you are in the middle of a deposition or a plea bargain whereby the test is being administered under order of the court to determine if the plea bargain should stand.
So, the answer is, how much do you want to stay out of jail?
By the way, most International law enforcement agencies and U.S. Federal law enforcement use voice stress and optic registration devices now instead of the polygraph. More reliable and indicitative of truthfulness.

Lie detectors are notoriously inaccurate and, in fact, may not be used in evidence in several states. As such, a person should refuse to take a test which is inadmissable and unreliable. I doubt that taking such a test can be forced upon you. Also, I've been told that the examiners gain more information from people taking such tests based upon how they sit, where they move in response to questions, how their eyes shift, and other body language signals than from the actual test results themselves.

Uhm -(you wrote) "if I lie" - well then don't lie and you won't have a problem. The problem is when you HAVE TO LIE on a lie detector test in order to pass. They have books out on this - some of them talk about putting deodorant on your hands, putting a plug in your butt (I'm not kidding), overdosing on pain or sleep medication etc. . . and so forth. Feel free to check out one of these books and good luck with what you do. Remember the truth sets you free.

First and foremost just tell the truth. As the cliche says its the only thing that will set you free or the one that your about to testify. Just stay relax and cool. They will never know if you got any lie to burst out cause your heart rate(the one they are measuring and basing their judgement wether your telling a lie or not) is very much normal. And since the truth is with you it is going to be alright.

lie detector tests measure your heart rate and how it changes. if you stay calm your heart rate should stay regular and then they won`t know. if you get nervous after every time they ask you a question they`ll know your lying
