My Betta lives in a fish bowl, and I will soon be getting him a tank. After I cleaned out the bowl about a week ago, I started seeing bubbles in the bowl. I was wondering if these were soap bubbles, or bubbles when the fish sleeps. The bubbles are small, and are at the surface of the water. I was afraid to clean it out again, in case they were really soap bubbles, and not air bubbles.

My water was evaporating a little bit, so I poured some extra water in it. The bubbles fizzed a little bit, then went back to their normal size. Is this normal for a bubble nest?

Bubblenests are perfectly normal for any male betta to blow. It's not just a sign of him wanting to breed; it's also what they do to mark their territory. Because of this, you will find him blowing bubblenests, or guarding existing ones, when he sees his own reflection or when he sees another male. Bettas also often blow bubblenests when they have been moved into new homes.

Don't worry about it as bubblenests are usually a sign of healthy and happy bettas.

By the way, I'm not sure if you cleaned your bowl out with soap, since your post was rather ambiguous about it...but you shouldn't be doing this as soap is absolutely fatal to your fish. Any soap in your water, or even soap residue on your tank, gravel or decorations can kill your fish within days. Don't use soap on anything that your fish will come into contact with. Most of the time, you can scrub out your tank with plain, warm water; for sterilisation purposes, a mixture of vinegar and water will work fine.

A bubble nest will be more than just random bubbles on the surface of the water. it is after all a nest that the male is building and the bubbles stick together quite well and pile up into a little mound out of the water. Also bubbles from a nest will not fizz when you add new water to the tank. Some may pop as the water level rises if the nest is touching the side of the container.

It sounds like to me you have too much protein in the water on his bowl. That comes from uneaten food and his waste so a water changes should clear up the problem.

It is probably a bubble nest. The male Betta will make these for the females eggs. But they shouldn't fizz?
Do you use tap water? You might want to get the water tested. You can buy a kit or bring a sample to the local fish store.
My old fish bowl use to do that and I didn't have Bettas, because I used tap water and I didn't cycle the tank. (because I didn't know)
If it is soap, I don't recommend washing the bowl or anything with soap. It is dangerous for the fish. Actually, you shouldn't dump all the water out of the bowl when you clean it. Just about half or a quarter.

Ok, this usually happens with every young betta at least once. Your betta thinks he will be getting a mate soon and made a bubble nest for the eggs. No its not soap bubbles and removeing it, or keeping it there won't do anything. Yes when you add water that is normal. Don't worry about it, it actually means your betta is normal. Hope this helps!!! :0)

These are small air bubbles that the male betta will make in preparation to breed. If you are not planning to breed him, you can simply clean them out of the bowl.

This is called a buble nest. This is what bettas use in order to keep the eggs safe in the case until they hatch. Then the male betta will take care of the eggs. Try not to clean it out because this will upset your betta. It is his wonderous creation.
