I have a NETGEAR wireless router and an ethernet cable, but no High-speed Internet, only dial-up. All I want to do is connect my desktop with my laptop and share folders by SMB and login to my desktop with an ssh client. Can I do this with a Wireless router and two XP boxes?

Edit: The Cd that came woth the router automatically checks for a High speed Internet, If it doesn't find one, it stops.

A local lan which your router will create does not have to have internet for your computers to work together. You just connect the computers to the routers LAN ports or wireless port. Setup file and print shares on each machine (you can run the network wizard in XP) and you have your network.

Now if you want to access that network from the internet side,, you need something besides a dial up account.
