The job market has really changed for the worse as far as older workers are concerned. It has become much harder for them to keep the jobs they already have. For unemployed and barely employed older people (my spouse and myself included) it has become much more competitve and difficult. There's far too much ageism out there.

A cover letter is a business letter (written in business format) explaining whatever it is that you are enclosing (a cheque, a report, a resume/curriculum vitae). T

hat's why it's called a cover letter. It "covers" something else. If you send only the resume/cheque, then the person receiving it will be in doubt as to what it pertains to. So you send an explanatory cover letter.
