I will always be a staunch Republican but I hate the whole damn amnesty plan! They are giving this country away to foreignors.....Does this statement make any sense to you? It doesn't to me. I was a life-long democrat until Bill Clinton signed NAFTA, I dumped the dems and became an independent. Why would I continue to support a party who puts the interests of profits ahead of the working people in this country? That one act turned me away from the democrats and a President who up to that point I thought was doing a great job. I now vote the person and the issues and party be damned. Is America truly that full of lemmings that we continue to support a party that goes against its own base?

Brainwashed. One issue is not a betrayal. If you beleive that all of those people in congress should think exactly like you, well that is delusional.

If you vote for the person you will be betrayed on many levels, because that person will 99% of the time vote with the party, and if the party does not represent your general views, you are screwed.

You have to pick a party that represents you generally, you are never going to find utopia and they are not going to be just like you.

Think how boring it would be if everyone were just like you.

To let a single issue change your affiliation is naive in my humble opinion.

Today, there are NO VIABLE third parties, get that, there are none that can win consistently seats in congress, get that. And until there are we are stuck with two parties.

There is one thing that can change the stranglehold the two parties have on politics today........... ta da......

TERM LIMITS.

Now we all know the dems will NEVER go for it, they are on record six times in the last 12 years of even debating it and until the repubs hold 67% of the seats we are not going to get it that way.

Congress has already refused to respond to the states requests for a constitution convention, against the law of the land I might add, bunch of criminals.

SO that leaves it to you and I. Quit worrying about who is President, they are term limited. Name one thing besides SSI that a pres did that we were not able to recover from in a short period of time, the pres is almost meaningless in the long term future of our country.

Congress writes the laws, the steal and spend our money and the do not represent us, in fact they resent us.

We have to get rid of the lifers in congress and that means we are going to have make a sacrifice, and vote for someone who is not in our party. We have to do this to save our Country. It is the only way outside of a violent revolution.

Can you do it? The premise of your question is correct, why keep re-electing them, not the party, but the corrupt career politician in congress.

My understanding is that Bush and his cabinet are the ones with the stupid amnesty plan. I loved Bush for standing up in the war on terror, as I believe he did the right thing, but the amnesty issue is about killing me. I don't, and never will agree with it. Illegals go home, is my view, and will always be so. But, that is not to say that all Republicans feel the way he does, or even some Democrats. This time it seems the American People must take charge of the situation. It is a little sad that we Americans may have to use our second Amendment rights after all. I live in Southern Ca, and have lived all over this country, especially the South, and I know how damn tired the Southerners feel, about illegals, and the problems they cause. I have a gun, and whenever we can group together, I am ready when I get the call to go to war.

If there is a candidate that really hits the majority of the issues I support I will vote for them no matter what party they are. But overall I stand with the party that brought me to the table even if the desert me on one issue, since I try not to be so entrenched in one issue that it overwhelms me to change parties. On Immigration I see the Democratic leadership as worse in their proposals than what the Adm and Rep leaders are pushing so I am either left out of the process or try to make my party aware of their incorrectness on this issue.

You appear to be a wise and thoughtful person. If you feel betrayed by your party's values, of course you should switch, or even better, become an independent thinker. Just be careful not to fall into the trap of abandoning your principles simply because you disagree with your party on any one single issue. If, on the other hand, you detect a trend away from what you believe to be of fundamental importance to you, then vote independently.

The problem is basically that it is a two party system. We really have no choice except democrat or republican. Other parties are only strong enough to steal votes from either to influence the outcome.
So we really have no choice but to pick the least of the two evils.

The members of the party shape the party. The base tends to set the agenda. Do individuals get elected and get caught up in intrigues of state ? Yes. Do things get done that we don't like? Yes. If we then desert the party are things more likely to come back our way? No. In order to have your team play the game the way you want them too you must be a part of that team.
Independents do not direct anything they only react. Reactionaries are always victims.

I am a conservative and feel the same way. Politicians are too much about themselves. What the Republicans are doing with immigration is completely insane. What needs to happen is conservatives take back the party and we put our people in.

Neither party is going to satisfy everyone. Anything that leans even close to being Socialist, would never, ever, receive my vote.

On the conservative side, I might not agree with everything, but it certainly meets my ideology much better, provided the right people get into office.

Yes, I'm disappointed about the Amnesty bill.

I believe that the reason the Republicans are not in power is because their base decided to stay home last November. Secondly, a poor Republican Congress is still better than any Democraticly controlled Congress.

Mostly, they support whichever party can convince them that the other party is more terrible.

If you want a candidate who is against NAFTA and illegal immigration, consider Tom Tancredo or Ron Paul.
