why was there a red moon last night??

This happens when the light from the sun shines through the earth's atmosphere before it gets to the moon. This strips out all the other light except red.

I didn't see it and I don't know what phase the moon is in, but usually this happens with full moon near the horizon. Because the light has to travel through more of the atmosphere, the shorter wavelengths are absorbed, and the longer orange and red are what we see.
