I live in Illinois, USA. We wait 9 months of the year. Suffer through months of windy, winter weather for 3 months of decent weather. Now, there is an invasion of cicadas. I feel like my summer has been hijacked. They are everywhere - crawling up trees, hanging on small branches, flying around me, rolling on the ground, making piles of carcasses in the grass...it is gross. I don't have to see the movie "Bug" because I have a good horror show in my neighborhood.

So when will these things die and not come back for another 17 years? Also, what damage are they doing besides prompting several news stories about people eating them? Thanks!

Nope, the cicadas have run off the squirrels though. They don't come in swarms every year here though - every 17 years.

Pan, I'll see what I can do about the pics. I need a USB to get them off my phone.

Well, cicadas will appear every so often in just about every area. We haven't had a severe problem with ours since 5-6 years ago. They were also the 17 year Cicadas so they'll be back in another 12 or so years. We also have some that come out more often, like 13 year Cicadas and I am not sure when they will return but I will tell you that these Cicadas WILL be gone in a couple of weeks. They never last long and then they're gone for 17 years. BUT, don't forget, you might have another onslaught of Cicadas before 17 years from now because of the other Cicadas that are due to come out again eventually. It's not something that happens every year, everywhere but when they DO appear, it's quite annoying and sometimes the Cicadas are pretty numerous. As I said, give it a couple of weeks and they will dwindle down to very few and then they'll be gone. Hope this helps!!!

I'm pretty sure that the cicadas have eaten almost all my outdoor plants and flowers. I have not had this problem over the past several years, and this year they are here, and all my plants are being eaten. Hope they will go away soon today is September 16th.

There was an article about this on CNN last week, you might be able to find it in their archives.

Cicadas don't do any negative harm to the environment, they're just midly annoying to listen to.

Supposedly, they're supposed to die within a month.

Hang in there, by mid-July you'll be in the clear.

every year is an new experience. you might as well get used to them or plan on buying lots of soil based pesticides to use every year for your whole area.

that or look into bio remediation. many small ground animals eat these bugs, have you run off the squirrels in your area?

After they've mated, they die. Hey, can you send me a picture of their swarms? I live in Brunei and though we get cicadas, they're really rare and they don't form swarms. Thanks. My mail: panchingyaw@yahoo.com or panchingyaw@hotmail.com. thanks again!
