What is the black smoke in the series Lost?

The Monster is one of the central mysteries on the Island. Although its nature is still unknown, it has appeared as a freely-moving cloud of black smoke, sometimes attacking people and at other times sparing them. The Monster produces a variety of loud noises and frequently rustles foliage and uproots trees as it moves. It also sometimes produces brief flashes of bright light, and appears to be able to project images from a person's past. It has been encountered by the survivors many times, beginning as an unseen threat in "Pilot, Part 1", although it wasn't until "Exodus, Part 2" that it was actually seen by the audience. Both Juliet and Ben claimed that they (and possibly the Others as a whole) didn't know what the monster was. But as of "The Shape of Things to Come", Ben seems to be able to summon the monster.

The others are having a cookout and the smoke from the grills has become charged with the electromagnetic energy radiating from the hatch and taken on a life of its own.

nobody knows what the black smoke is yet, hopefully we'll find out in the next season. It could be anything though judging on what we've seen so far.

I think the black smoke is Jacob in another form, I think it has something to do with the electromagnetic field too. (When no one can find the island) Guess we will have to wait until next year to find out (hopefully).
