Yahoo checks for viruses in the Yahoo mail, because it actually resides on their servers where they can check it. They have no way of checking other e-mail systems or web sites and downloads for viruses. Unlike some of the paid services (AOL, etc), Yahoo does not provide a local virus program for your computer. You have to install your own.
If you do not have one, go to http://download.com and look for "AVG Free" (there is both a free and a paid version of the program - go with the free one). Have used it for years on multiple computers without a problem.

Yahoo only checks for viruses in your Yahoo web-mail e-mail inbox.
You still need an anti virus program installed on your computer.
