Summer. . . .think of rhymes.

Summer/bummer/dumber

grass/ alas/to pass

cooler/fooler/ruler

drought/clout/take-out

flowers/showers/mowers

I give you three options in each rhyme - you can use two of them or none of them. . .And then think of a moment in your life that seems to mean summer to you - a party outdoors where you met some guy, or a swimming hole in the country.

Then incorporate these things in to the words you already have, or make new rhyming pairs. You must stick to the a,b,a,b,c,d,c,d scheme that the teacher wants. and the meter of each line. If it is a Shakespearean sonnet, you have to have 10 syllables in each line.

Go for it.

The days grow longer with blue skies for me,
And I contemplate all the fun ahead.
Going to the beach, lazing under the trees,
My cares for my education are shed.
Dreams of carnivals and amusement parks,
Movies, video games, to shop all day,
Picnics, biking, and fourth of July sparks,
Summer is right for all these things and play.
Eating grilled hot dogs and corn on the cob,
Watermelon and ice cream all taste great.
Come the summer I’ll take a part-time job,
To earn spending money and I can’t wait!
Summer’s are fun times, winters are too cold,
So in all my poems summer is extolled!

It has got to be 14 lines long to be a sonnet. Or 7 rhyming couplets. If it has to be about summer, here are some end examples;
Run-Sun, Power-Flower, Grass-Pass, Earth-Dearth, Water-Altar, Boat-Moat, Dove-Love.

The rest is down to you.

make a list of all the things you see in summer, what it feels like, why summer is different from other times of the year.

here is an idea to get you started:

Girls in their summer frocks waiting for trains
For buses, taxis ... girls buzzing like bees
Snapping each other on their cameraphones
(But there's no time to waste on memories).

Girls laughing, talking, silent in the mall
(Checking the glass to see how good they look);
Girls stretched like sunning cats on garden walls
Swinging their denimed legs. Girls reading books,

Nodding their heads to ipods, eying guys,
Or just too tired to; talking about sex,
Or clothes, or tv, or philosphies;
Girls who have done that, wondering what comes next.

Girls staying out late; not going home at all.
If summer needs a reason then it's girls.
