I'm a huge Star Wars fan and this is the one question I never knew. All you get are time lines and how long the span of the Star Wars stories occur (1,000 yrs). I would like to know what Earth year A New Hope started. When was "a long time ago?"
1 Million BC or 80 AD? Any ideas?

It was in another Galaxy (far far away), not just a neighboring star system. So if George had to wait till the light from that galaxy got here to see what happened, that is a few thousand light years away. You'd need a 16 inch diameter lens telescope to see that far.

Let's see now... :-) Last year wasn't very long ago....
It doesn't seem that long since Kurt Cobain died and grunge was popular.
The 80's were just a 'while ago' when things were shiny & cool.
The 70's wasn't that long ago because I can still remember it very well....
The 60's... Now the 60's are ancient times! Kennedy was shot to death 'a long time ago'... The Vietnam War began 'a long time ago'... The Beatles came to America 'a long time ago'...
I'm guessing the time 'A New Hope' takes place was during Earth's 1960s Decade ;-) LOL!

Star Wars Episode 4 came into theaters in 1977. It doesn't matter what earth year it took place in because it wasn't even in our Galaxy.

Star Wars applies to almost any year. There is always the fight against good and bad, the force or the dark side. We are in a war now, but who is the force, and who represents the dark side??

I'm not sure even George Lucas thought of it. He just used "A Long time ago" to avoid thinking about it. ;)

well it's supposed to be a long time ago, so it's in the past of earth time. but not specified how long ago.

it could have already happened because it doesn't say what year it said in a galaxy far far away
