I don't know where you live, but in my area good used computers are easy to find at garage sales and thrift stores if you know enough about computer repair to fix minor problems. Although never totally free, most of the computers I have bought were bargains and cost less than $25..
I buy used computers as a hobby just to tinker with them. I like fairly new models that don't work, usually for simple and cheap-to-fix reasons. Many computer users do not understand computers and will trash a perfectly good one that could have been fixed very cheaply. I have bought many "broken" computers for a few dollars and got my money's worth having fun trying to fix them. Most of the time, I ended up with a very good computer for very little money.
If I buy a computer that cannot be fixed cheaply, I strip off the good parts and use them to refurbish a computer with minor problems.
Usually the expensive part of restoring a used computer is the operating system and other programs. However, I have install disks for all the programs I use and usually format used hard drives before installing my own programs (I know Microsoft frowns on this, but I repair computers for fun not profit).
Examples of recent purchases:
- A custom-built tower with an 1100 MHz AMD processor, 80-Gig HDD (pre-loaded with WinXP Pro, MS Office XP and other useful programs), 256 Meg of RAM, a DVD player, a CD-ReWriter, keyboard, mouse and speakers, all for $20. A couple days later, I bought a 17-inch CRT monitor at a local Goodwill store for $5. So a complete system cost me less than $30, and I didn't even have to fix anything, although I checked everything and cleaned some spyware from the hard drive..
-A CPQ tower with a 1000-MHZ AMD processor, 45-Gig HDD (pre-loaded with Win2000 Pro), 256 Meg of RAM, a DVD-Rewriter, and a CD player for $5. The owner told me the motherboard was shot, so I bought it for the usable parts. And guess what? It works perfectly. I just reset the BIOS to factory defaults, and it booted right up. I found another 17-inch CRT monitor at the same Goodwill store for $5, added a keyboard, mouse and speakers from another garage sale and ended up with a complete system for less than $15.
Also, many local companies routinely sell 3-4 year-old computers to employees. A friend buys a "newer" computer that way every couple of years. The downside is that the companies always erase the entire hard drive so he has to install his own programs (but like me, he already has the install disks for the programs he wants), If you know anyone who works for a fairly large local company, you might find a good deal that way.
Good luck.

Try Craig list or Kijiji in your local area. There are occasionally people giving old computers away, so they don't have to contribute to landfill problems, it is highly doubtful that you'll get a P3, seeing it is still on the boundaries of a useful machine, but still possible. Now there are these supposed companies giving away free laptops (participation required of course) but that is not my recommendation. Good luck in your search
Also on those 2 sites if you have anything worth something you don't need or use anymore, you can list it for free and get the money or trade to get yourself a descent machine

You could try "Internet Begging".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_begging
Have a good story on how your family is too poor to afford one and how you and your siblings desperately need one for their education. This would definitely make people feel good by helping you out by giving you their unused but good computer.
Some people might send you cash. If you get too many computers you could sell the excess inventory on eBay.

You can't get a free computer. There will be some cost associated with it regardless of where you get it from..

You should be able to get a PIII 800Mhz/256RAM/8.4GB/CD-ROM/mouse/keyboard/15"CRT display with 50$ on ebay. That is as "free" as it gets in this world.
