My dad's merc w124 rear plate number is rectangle type, i saw some is square type.. what's the difference?

Nothing. The style of number plates is determined by law, not so much the vehicle. Some vehicles designed for the US market have narrow spacing for the number plate and if registered in Europe will have to have a large square number plate instead of the normal long narrow type.

All depends on what country your in. Some countries have a square plate and some a long rectangle one
