The GOP is in its death throes.

Another "moderate" would be a disaster, and might even be the death knell for the party. However, I'm not sure most Republicans even remember what we were supposed to stand for anymore, or what it means to be a "moderate" or a RINO. We've gotten so far off-base with Iraq that we've forgotten that we're supposed to be the party of less government, lower taxes, less regulation, more personal responsibility, and more individual freedom. That was the Reagan mantra. But almost none of the current candidates are talking about ANY of those issues. It's all about Iraq. Which is sad, because Saddam is dead, and Osama isn't even IN Iraq. Yes, there are bad people there, but it isn't the nexus of evil. It's proven to be a distraction from Afghanistan, where we really SHOULD have put our emphasis.

Today's Republican candidates, especially the front-runners, are all trying to play like moderates on taxes, spending, and regulation, and yet are 100% behind the Iraq War. It makes them pretty much unelectable, and yet waters down our party principles.

I'm convinced that Ron Paul is the right candidate for our time. Yes, he'll have a difficult time winning the primary, but if he does win, I think he'd be the only one with a chance at winning the general election. More importantly, his values are closer to the Reagan values that reinvigorated the party 20 years ago, the last time it was on the verge of collapse. We need that kind of a principled leader today, because we as a party are suffering from a lack of principle.

The real question will be can the far left afford Moderate and "Reagan Democrats" in the next general election in 08.. With the failed 06 far left take over of the party (29% aapproval rate of the Palosi Congress)... the left is scrambling to get back to the middle for voters are showing their displeasure with the outcome of the 06 elections.

So (historically in general elections, the middle vote will be a major factor)... Right now we only have far left (Moveon.org approved and funded candidate's)... So the party that captures the middle and not the extremes will capture the white house in 08... unfortunately the left by having the Rosie's Harry "We lost" Reid's out front the left has the impression to the public that it was hijacked by the far left.

Who cares about the " Republican Party " They shoved the conservative who voted for them down the drain long ago. perhaps they need to take a second look at the methods and not the means. However, If Hillary or Oboma win the world will convert to Muslim or die and we wont even have a GOP to care about. SO to answer your question yes more moderates will screw the GOP.

Personally the moderate republicans are an upgrade from the leftist republicans they used to be.

They're learning, but are still warped to learning too slowly for their own good.

LOL, they'll never be duped enough.

They actually think because Thompson is an actor that he's 'Reaganesque', it's hilarious.

Republicans are idiots, and they'll always be idiots.

I agree. What this country needs is a compassionate conservative as President, no more moderates. What's that? George W. Bush is a compassionate conservative, well golly gee Andy, fooled me.

I am surprised at the responses from the above conservative contributors. I would think that they would welcome moderates into their party. I guess the "RINOs need not apply" comment is very telling. Either you are in lock step with extremism or they don't want you around. Well, that should make the GOP pretty ineffective.
