Well in a way it is a trick question. I think if you have a couple drinks "buzzed" versus being sleepy -- being tired is much worse. You do know you are tired, but if you are determined to drive there is not much that is going to keep you awake (why do you think there are rumble strips on the roads). If you are aware and pull over then you are good. If you are just buzzing off a couple beers you are probably more alert...still geared up from the nights activities. But if you are DRUNK you are probably going to pass out and fall asleep anyways...so that is def worse!
ps....just an opinion I am in no way say driving when you have been drinking is acceptable in any way! But neither is when you are tired.

drunk driving because people drive much more crazily drunk than tired. THat's why they don't give tickets for sleepy driving. Although you should do neither, if I had to choose my driver, I'd want them sober. Drunk people are very very crazy, they can't see straight, they can't function their brain properly, and they mistake things for other things, like they might think there is a deer while really they are crashing into a wall. They might go up a ramp the wrong way and go against traffic and slam into someone head-on. My dad almost died from a drunk driver, he has scars all over his body because the man he was driving with was tipsy and crashed into a telephone pole, and my dad's whole face shattered through the glass because his seatbelt wasn't fastened. And someone wrecked into me that was drunk, it wasn't a deathly accident, but it was still head on. Drunk driving is way more dangerous and common for accidentsand death, than sleepy driving. You here of people dying and almost dying b/c of drunk driving , you don't here it as much because the driver is tired.
THat's why I make sure whoever drives the car is sober, alert, and intellegent.

DRUNK DRIVING NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! After having two DUI'S in 98 and waking up in jail in a drunk tank, having no idea how I got there and not knowing if I killed anyone scared the living crap out of me.I am no longer a drinker nor do I drive drunk.I have also driven a car while sleepy but there are things you can do like pull over take a brief nap and not worry about getting in trouble with the law by bieng drunk.

I personally think that they are both just as bad as each other! The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 100,000 of reported crashes occur as a result of drowsiness, and considers sleep deprived drivers a hazard equal in severity to drunk drivers. Studies show that staying awake for 18 hours and driving produces the same effect as being legally drunk behind the wheel. The greater the sleep deprivation, the closer the correlation to higher levels of intoxication.
51 percent of American adults confess that they have driven while drowsy.
24 percent of 18-29 year-old drivers have fallen asleep at the wheel during the past year.
Older people fare better and are more alert. Only 15 percent of people 30 to 64 years old are likely to nod off in traffic, and just 6 percent of drivers 65 and older nap on the road.
Car crashes that result from drowsy driving are most common in younger people, especially 20 year olds.
Forty-two percent of adults become stressed when they are sleepy behind the wheel, while 32 percent are impatient and make reckless decisions.
Both younger people (22 percent) and adults (12 percent) hit the gas pedal when they are sleepy.
-eyes closing or going out of focus by themselves
-trouble keeping one's head up
-inability to stop yawning
-having wandering and disconnected thoughts
-inability to remember driving the last few miles
-drifting between lanes
-tailgating
-missing traffic signs
-jerking the car back into the lane, and/or drifting off the road

Nothing is worse than driving and using your cell phone. Both drinking and sleepy your decision to drive is off. But you are thinking fully when you answer the phone. Make a conscious decision to turn it off, or pull over and answer, or let it ring. Also sleepy and drunk drivers tend to be at night and in less traffic. Cell phone users are right in the middle of rush hour!

Researchers have found that going a long time without sleep (around 24 hours or so, or less if you're already sleep-deprived) is the equivalent of having a blood alcohol level right at most states' legal limit of .08%. Any longer, and it gets worse, just as it gets worse with higher alcohol consumption.
Sleep-deprived driving is VERY dangerous. You can zone out with no warning, for several seconds at a time! Even if the window is open and the radio is blaring. Don't do it.

They are both dangerous, but if you are sleepy you can pull off the road and take a short nap. If you are drunk it takes several hours before you can drive safely.

I would never drink too much and drive. So I have been much more dangerous when I let myself get too tired. So for me sleeping driving is worse. But for people who would drive when they are very drunk, I'm sure that is worse...more likely to happen in a populated area.
