They have a regular gasoline engine like any other car. On top of that, they have a battery that will power the car on startup or coasting (depending on the make). As the wheels spin, they act like generators creating electricity to charge the battery.

I really do not like cars with two propulsion systems in them when a super efficent gasoline engine would do. The Car conpany puts in a heavy electrical motor and batterys and electronic gizmos the technician has to have special rubber gloves electrical shock to work on. Also what do the batterys cost to replace those toxic batterys where to you recycle them? TREE HUGGERS BEWARE I will laugh when your Hybrid gets five or six years old...
