I have had acid reflux for about 8 years now. It started when I was drinking a Pepsi and the bubbles expanded in my throat, causing severe pain. The heartburn started pretty much right after that, but I had chest pain associated with it for about 4 years. This past year has been the worst for the pain. The doctor has me on omeprizole and it really helps the heartburn. I have been taking it for 3 months and still have chest pain.
What can be the problem causing the pain and is there any treatment?

I've tried a few other meds and they haven't worked well. Prilosec works very well. Could it be that I need to give it more time or are there other issues that can cause the pain, resulting from reflux?

I'm 40. I do have to stay away from certain foods; ie pasta, lasagna, chocolate, etc. I am very disciplined on what I eat. Things were very irritated for a long time. It still feels like I have a lump in my throught sometimes with the pain. Beside that, I'm in good shape.

After having acid reflux for numerous years I am going to share what I have learned and it will not involve all of the medicine your taking ( I used to also)
In the last few months I have learned that the acid reduction medications actually reduce the healthy acid in your stomach making the problem worse.
We began drinking lemon juice in our bottled water to supposedly, bump up our metabolism. Oddly enough it took care of my acid reflux. By adding the healthy acid back to your stomach and digestive system the burning goes away.
Go figure, it seems wrong but it works.
Try to do a full system flush by drinking the lemon juice, prunes or ;prune juice for your bowels and Cranberry drink daily to make your digestive system healthy again.
Cranberry drink is made by mixing 8 ounces of unsweetened cranberry CONCENTRATE from the health food store with a gallon of water. Drink a glass 20 min, before each meal.
It will flush toxins out like crazy. (you will peep a lot) It makes your liver and kidneys very healthy.
These are the simple things I do in my regular life now and
NO ACID REFLUX. But the lemon water (about 3 tablespoons to a 16 ounce water bottle) will eliminate the burning IMMEDIATELY. We do that at least once a day.
Now sugar feeds bad bacteria in your body. So avoid sweets.
Good Luck, I hope it works for you as well as it works for me.
I just read your last add on. THE LUMP IN THE THROAT, I HAVE IT TO. Have your THYROID checked. I can seem to tighten around your throat when you swollow. My thoat also constricts with some things, I started out thinking it was wheat, then moved to yeast (because I could eat bisquits (no yeast) The I had a problems with nuts and raw mushrooms.
Mushrooms are a fungus as is yeast.
For your own benefit do a major search on YEAST INFECTIONS. It seems that all of the things that we both have and have had are related to A Yeast infection that can be in your digestive system top to bottom and effect you enormously.
I am now taking Acidophiles pills daily and eat plenty of Yogurt. I try hard to keep my PH balance as right as possible. Yes men can get yeast infections also.
Good Luck. Sorry about the book, but I hope something helps. If I got through it you can to.

This book is probably the most informative and practical guide on the subject of acid reflux and heartburn that I have ever read https://tr.im/acidrefluxcauses
I was prescribed Lansoprazole which was brilliant but after two years of aching joints, extreme muscle pain which the doc gave me cortisone jags for, with some research I discovered the drug Lansoprazole was causing these rare side effects but it was I who diagnosed it NOT my doctor, I came off the drug 2 months ago, changed my diet and discovered just eating an apple stops any acid reflux, I eat an apple before bed, brilliant no acid, any time I feel the slightest sign of reflux I simply eat an apple. Apple juice is not that good nor is anything else I have tried including honey at stopping reflux.

Check with your doctor first, but it may be that you have some inflamation from damage to a chest muscle. It will feel like someone is cutting you right through your chest wall. I am not kidding! You may also experience shoulder pain because when the chest muscles or even back muscles are irritated these muscles and your nerves are all connected in someway or the other therefore causing pain in other areas. It can really be painful! I used to have this problem a lot especially since my car wreck. A chiropratic can do wonders for you and also taking anti-flamatory medication like ibuprofen is helpful.

First of all is it chest pain or the same pain you have with acid reflux? Also you don't give your age. The pain could be gall bladder especially if it goes right through to your back. Have you been checked out for cardiac symtoms? It could just be that your insides are so irritated that you still have pain. I would say if you have been on meds for 3 months, and still having alot of discomfort, you should revisit your physician for a follow-up. The other trick is elevate the head of your bed on 6 inch blocks. This reduces the acid to be able to go back up to your throat. There is more than one brand of meds for A.R. so call and make an app't. Also is it related to specific foods?

If you are still having pain, the reflux may not be completely under control, just less severe. You might need to either increase your dose of the prilosec, try a different med (there are lots out there for reflux, or try a combination of meds. Talk to your doctor.
