I need to get an indigent man from Fflorida to PA by plane. He is currently in the hospital and needs care. There is no one in florida to help him. He will require extensive medical assistance, including oxygen. Is there an agency that can help with arrangement and/or cost? Is ther some way for him to get government assisted health care like medicade? He is not old enough for medicare.

Contact the social worker at the hospital !! Thats what they're there for, to assist in a discharge plan & if it is feasible to move this man to PA the worker can give some direction on how to make this happen. Is this a family member of yours or just a friend ? There are a lot of factors that play into such a move. Is he currently on medical assistance in FL ? If yes, then moving to PA will not stop that, you would then apply in PA & then FL would still cover him for the remainder of the month of the move plus the following month, recall thats what it was when my sister moved my mom from MN to Cali & also when I moved her back to MN .

My other question would be what kind of "extensive" medical assistance ? Again, it would be dependant on what is recommended by his dr's what would be appropriate for his medical condition & the fact he is on oxygen. Airlines have accomodations for oxygen, in the case of my mom's move, the oxygen company had the tank delivered to the gate waiting for her when we traveled, the airline had an aisle specifically for that use to strap the tank down. And the airlines was awesome & assisted me the entire trip, we were the 1st to board & the last to exit, only problem was a wheelchair because there was no room on the plane, and we had to wait 90min for them to bring the wheelchair.

In any case, I still say ask for a social worker to set up a meeting with the man, you, the doctors, working together you can come up with a plan that works, dont try to do this on your own !!!

If he's in extremely poor and unstable health, he should be airlifted by an air ambulance. I'm guessing he's not in such poor health or they would have done it already. A hospital social worker, where he is at (if in the hospital) should be able to make all arrangements for everything - including applying for medicaid. If he's at home, he's likely not in such bad shape. What is 'extensive medical assistance' to you, is not necessarily that to medical health professionals. There are services for the disabled, basically PCA's to accompany him on flights, but he will be paying for the PCA salary plus flight and all associated expenses. Start with the county where he lives and ask for assistance - the county will have that information plus Medicaid applications, etc. They may pick up some of his travel needs and expenses. If he's in the hospital, they should be able to make all arrangements before discharge. A family member or person close to him might also be able to fly down, learn how to care for him, and fly back with him.

If he is drawing disability he and he needs major health care you can go the the department of human resources where he is right now and see if you can help him apply for emergency medicade. They will take a look at his application and since he can't get there they will conduct a telephone interview with him and will hopefully talk to his doctor(s) and he will hopefully get it. I am on disability and I am having to wait to get medicade or medicare also because of my age. Also I would let them know that he has got to go to PA on a plane and you may need help with the expense of his ticket. As for the airlines, you will just have to call the 800 numbers and see what requirements will have to be met but they do make reasonable accomadations for the disabled.

Your best bet is to get a social worker involved. They should be able to help you make arrangements for fixed wing transport. As for the medical assistance aspect, I'm not sure. There are a number of air medical transport services, both fixed and rotor wing (in your case, you'll need fixed wing), so ask a social worker to help you with getting quotes from different companies.

Because the man is on oxygen, I doubt you are going to find an airline to accomodate your needs, but you may find a private ambulance service or state transportation service that can transport him to PA. Talk to the local Human Resources office and state your dilemma to them. I am sure they will FIND a solution to your problem one way or another and even a way to where this man may get help to get where he is going at no cost to him and also help once he gets there......Good luck......

You need to contact the airport about transportation for him. The only agency I can think of that could help with medicaid is social services or social security office. God bless.
