You could become an accomplished pianist without lessons but it is most likely easier with a teacher to guide you. Also a teacher is good to know proper playing techniques. I'm not sure if the piano has any hard techniques, but you don't want to form bad habits. I've played the flute for eight years and i have a really bad habit of my fingers going over the edge of the keys. My old flute teacher never told me to stop so now i have a bad habit. My current teacher always reminds me but habits are hard to break. So i suggest some lessons to see if you have the correct techniques or hand positions.

Buy one of the Yamaha beginner electric pianos the sync up to you Computer.(around $350.00). They come with lessons and more lessons on line. Play along one hand then the other then try both. beileve me this is not simple. Anything musically takes time but this way you go at your own pace and if you apply your self you can make amazing progress quickly.

Being somewhat of an adult "prodigy" or a savent might help. Of you practise alot you may be decent in two years but maybe not a pianist. Well, you never know if you give it all you got....

Practice, practice, practice.

My husband is teaching himself using the 'chord method' from the internet.

Also, I bought him something called A FAKE BOOK. It has lots of songs you know in it, with very easy arrangements.
He's never taken a lesson, but he can play beatles songs. cool.

Take piano lessons and practice, practice, practice! If you can, you can teach yourself...like I did.
