ALL professional sports events start at "odd" times. It allows for a pre-game show. Yes, even if it's not televised, there's a pregame show, because there's still radio.

Always been that way.
Growing up in the NYC area
Mets were 8:1o p.m. and 1:05 p.m.
Twlight doubleheadders were like 4:05 p.m.

It is also for tv and radio so they can do some pregame intros and make some advertising revenue. If the game started at 8 p.m. sharp it would be hard for the radio host or the tv host to intro the game and its features.

Check back into the history of baseball before TV and see what a start time was then. Probably was on the dot. 1:00 p.m. etcx.

Because they usually start 5 minutes later than the start time so a 3:55 p.m. game really starts at 4:00 p.m.

I think it's maybe just a way of making sure it gets started on time, so the extra five minutes is kind of a fudge factor. So in the minds of players, managers, umps, etc. the game starts at 1:00 or 7:00, but they have a few extra minutes becuase it's officially at 1:05 or 7:05.

This is to allow radio and television announcers to get on the air, introduce themselves, introduce the starting lineups, have a commercial and be ready for the first pitch.
