Why would you want to borrow $5,000? Do the calculation, look at how much you'll owe, pay back and have to carry for quite some time.

My credit card companies are perpetually sending me checks offering deals like "4.99% interest for the life of the balance, $75 transfer fee." You probably get the same kind of offer. I would use one of the checks if I need $5,000 quickly. Just make sure that, if the offer is 0% for a limited time, you can pay it off before the higher rates kick in. Otherwise it can be a very expensive way to borrow money.

A similar idea is to use the credit card company's web site to make a balance transfer. Almost all of the balance tranfer offers allow one to deposit the amount of the transfer into a checking account.

That's tricky. Try getting setting up a PayPal account and charging your credit card $5000 using your PayPal account.

Or if you know somone with a paypal account you might try getting them to charge your card for an item, I believe you can use your credit card as a means to fund a PayPal account so you would need a PayPal account as well.

Do you have a family member or close friend who intends to make a big purchase? You could take their cash and buy the item for them with your card. Check with your credit company first to see if this is legal.

Any method you use is considered FRAUD according to the terms of your contract with the card issuer. If they find out, they won't sue. They will just charge you interest and fees as if you had taken a cash advance in the first place. Of course, they will take their time 'discovering' what happened to maximize the interest.
