The most important problem a new USA president must fix is the war in Iraq.
The next president can repair relations with Europe, bring all the middle east countries to the table and the UN too, she/he can make it clear that the US seeks no permanent bases in Iraq and has no designs on the Iraqi oil. She/he would have more credibility with the Iraqi factions (Sunis, Shias and Kurds) than Bush could possibly build.
A republican president could try some of this, but it is not in his/her grain, the republican base does not believe in this way of doing things and the Iraqi parties do not trust a republican following Bush.
A democratic president and a democratic congress can put all the pieces of the puzzle together.
The above plan could not be implemented now because
the Iraqi parties do not trust Bush.

National unity.
The USA is so divided that NOTHING important is ever achieved, and no widely accepted and lasting solution to problems is ever found.
For example:
Illegal Immigration
Border Security
Health Care
Social Security
Foreign Policy (Here I include the War in Iraq, War on Terror, Iran, Korea, Darfur, etc)
Climate Change
Education

Keep in mind that the US is the only real 'Superpower' left in the world, and hence has an obligation to lead by example.
Strong and coherent leadership is demanded.
If and when the US speaks with one united voice, the world will listen, (it always has) at the moment the world is laughing at the 'circus' that is happening on American soil. It is a 'tragicomedy'.
THE US URGENTLY NEEDS A 'MIDDLE ROAD'.

I wonder... what is important to me and most of the hard-working americans or what some "poll" will try to tell us is the most important. To me it is protecting America from the hate filled people who want to kill me and my family and all americans which I guess means the war, and immigration... Stop wasting time (and money) making new laws and enforce the ones we hav!!!!! I want to hear a polictician tell me the truth without wrapping it up in a bunch of blah blah blah. Quit telling me what "polls" say I want to hear. Oh and gas prices, stop blaming the station owners we need to start refining more not less. If people could figure that out they would be alot better off. We use more gas because there are more of us. I can't imagine out businesses (like landscapers, schwanns or any that use vehicles to get from job site to job site)and truck drivers are staying afloat when their out of pocket for fuel prices are rising (yeah they pass that on by raising their prices) but alot of folks can't they have contracts.

Illegal Immigration. If they pass this bilge they have in the senate now, there will need to rescind it. There will be a whole new gang in congress, both democrat and republican alike.

Repeal the 17th Amendment.

If we did that, it would fix everything in about ten years, fifteen tops.
