I have the TI-83 Plus.
I can't figure it out. Is it just x2?

Also, can you solve problems like 12=5x+2?
Even though you don't need a calculator to solve that.

Hi,

For x², you can press the x key, just to the right of the green alpha key and then press the squared (x²) key, just above the log key, to the left of the comma key. So if you wanted fifteen squared, you could type in 15 and press the squared key. Your screen would show 15² and when you hit enter, you'd get the answer of 225.

Any other exponent except for x² needs to use the carat, ^, to show that the next thing is an exponent. So x³ would be entered as x^3 on your calculator.

As for your equation, 12 = 5x + 2, you can move all the terms of your equation to one side so the equation equals 0. You don't even need to combine the like terms. So you could make this equation 5x + 2 - 12 = 0. Press the [Y=] button on your calculator and enter this equation so that Y1 = 5x + 2 - 12 (Don't put the "= 0"). Then if you press [GRAPH], you will see a graph. The point where it equals zero is the x intercept. This would be your answer for the problem. If it is an integer value, the way you can verify its value is to press [2nd] and [GRAPH], it will take you to a table of points on this graph. You will see that when x = 2, y = 0. That tells you that 2 is your solution.

If you had an equation like 10x - 24 = 0, you could enter the equation as Y1 = 10x - 24. When you graph this or if you solved it, you'd get an answer that is not an integer value. To find it on the calculator with your equation in Y1, press [2nd] and [TRACE] to get to the CALC commands. Go to the command zero and press Enter. For left bound, either press the left arrow until the cursor is to the left of the x intercept, or type in a number that is on the screen but smaller than the x intercept, like the number 0. Then for the right bound, either press the right arrow until the cursor is to the right of the x intercept, or type in a number that is on the screen but larger than the x intercept, like the number 7. then for guess get close to the intercept and press Enter. (When there's only 1 intercept, you can just press Enter.) The calculator will print on the screen that the x intercept is at x = 2.400000 and y = 0.

I hope that helps!!

12=5x+2
-2
10=5x
10/5=5x/5 The / is the divide symbol
2=x

And x^2 (x squared) on that calculator is the 5th button down from the top on the left side.

12 = 5x + 2

12 - 2 = 5x + 2 - 2

10 = 5x

10 / 5 = 5x / 5

when solving problems like 12 = 5x + 2, you have to graph it, then trace and find the zeros.

everyone has showed you how to use the carot (^) button, so i wont bother you with it. as for equations, you really can't. you could make programs or do weird functions. what i recomend though is you use the grapher to solve, but do the question on paper. sorry.
