they'll get better. it started off as the pitchers not coming through and the offense doing good, and then the pitchers got better and the offense wouldn't come through. they're starting to work out the problems now, but loosing giambi is a big blow. but the rocket's back on monday and that should be a BIG boost

For the last seven years the answer has always been: pitching. Pitching pitching and more pitching. Last year they went and got Abreu and what killed them against Detroit? Pitching. They finally got Randy Johnson 3 years ago, yes. He was 41 then. Steinbrenner is a pretty lousy baseball man (no sense of team chemistry) but even he should see that at least ONE quality pitcher would be worth, oh, at least half the price of A-Rod.
That being said, remember that there are about 110 games left or so, and a come-back from where they are now would not be any kind of historical effort. They are loaded offensively. Never count the Yankees out, not until they get a magic number against them.

The injuries the yankee pitchers sustained would have crippled any team. I belive the yankees have started over 5 rookie pitchers this year. After the pitching settled down the bats got cold. They are getting older but they have to start hitting soon.Clemenes will help the team, expect the yanks to be back in the wild card hunt soon.

they got old and complacent.
This happened in the middle to late 1960s if you look at the Yanks.
Back then they were a white team and did not embace black and latin players and fell into the cellar real fast. Do a little checking back in the old days.

The pitchers suck! like wth, only andy pettite's is good there. yea, kinda disapointing this year, they're leading the leagues all the while until this year.. It's most probably the pitchers and just mistakes the fielders do. and giambi's injured!! sheesh..

injuries
age
team chemistry
not enough role players everyone talks about individual stats and thats why the team stats are what they are, DJ (derek jeter) has always been a quiet leader but he needs to step in there and tell everyone to get there finger out of their butts and start playing baseball. he needs to get angry now if the yanks are to have any hope of making the playoffs in october.
