I think you have to be careful, when helping others, that you keep things in perspective so you don't get overwhelmed. Other peoples problems often become a part of ours when we are close to the person and trying to help them get through a traumatic or tough time in their life. I think it's important to remember that you can't "fix" the problem or take away the pain or agony the other person is feeling. The best we can do is to be there and listen and try to be understanding. If it starts to affect your personal life, too, then you will not be as affective in helping the other person. Sometimes it ends up just taking it's toll on everyone involved. Step back and look at the situation realistically and do what you can to help, but don't take on the entire problem as if it were your own. It's important to keep things separate and to know that you can only be there as moral support for the other person but not a "fixer" of problems.

I try to keep things in perspective, but if I think about all the problems and suffering in the world, I can get very depressed.

maintaining a focus that you cannot control the other lives except your own, then again, that is hard enough in its self.
