I know adults who live alone and every one of them seems kind of "lost." I live alone...I am disastrously old...but happily I have friends and acquaintances all across the U.S. and Canada, thanks I guess to my work in the theatre. Right now, I'm touring a one-character play. I love people and I need the company of people. I am not religious, I am that dreaded thing, an atheist, but there is a spiritual thing in friendship. At 71, and a classical actor with something of a history, I am friends with men and women all across the age spectrum. When I'm away, we communicate by telephone, letters, email, "cards," books, little gifts, etc. Aside from my work, it makes me happy and, I think, it's keeping me alive. I have three grown children in California but their aging dad is of little or no interest to them. Perhaps if my bank account was larger...

Yes you can provided you have some absorbing work of your interest to do. For example I answers questions in Physics mathematics
and on any subject on yahoo Answers. I read a lot of books on Physics maths literature and spirituality.
I admit still one requires to share his feelings and ideas. You can try to do that by having on-line friends, farther the better.

no human being is meant to live totally alone because mortals are social beings. if one did live totally alone there might be serious physical and psychological problems. as proof of this read some accounts of real life persons who were stranded or put off ships on desert islands. they had serious problems readjusting to society
