I've tried to check out the community centres to no avail. I called up spotlight, found that they have lessons, $280 for 8 lessons. Is it worth it? Also, is it a good idea to just buy some self-help books? Are they useful?

By the way, I'm from Singapore. seems like in the US, they have many outlets for people to learn sewing. but there isn't much here in sg.

Local fabric stores and craft stores are the first place to look for beginner sewing classes. Community adult education classes are another possibility. If you can't find a class, the bulletin board at the fabric store may have a sewing teacher listed.

If you have a sewing machine and know how to use it, you could buy a simple pattern for a tote bag and make it. Then you can move on to clothes (start with an A-line skirt or pajama pants; they're the easiest) and dolls. Look for patterns that say Easy, Simple or Beginner on the envelope.

where do you live? here in the us various fabric stores do teach classes from time to time, i dont know if your classes at spotlight will be worth that cost as i havent a clue what they teach or how long each lesson is, if you have the ability to learn from books, try an idiots guide , most sewing machine shops have classes for their machines and a list of sewing teachers . I learn a lot from books but im able to do that where some people just read it and its greek to them.

Try some of the churches in your area. Mennonite and Amish will have classes for sewing more often than other churches. If you live near an Amish area, go to one of their yarn or fabric stores and ask. The Amish are usually very nice and willing to share what they know with you. I am from northern Indiana and the Amish hold classes to all interested when they teach them. If they don't have classes, someone might work with you one on one. Even if they don't ask for pay, give them something for their time. Hope this helps.

Books are fine if you are desperate, but the first time your machine seizes up, you might get discouraged. Many sewing stores have classes. In addition, check your school dpeartment. They often have adult ed classes in fall and spring, and someone might teach a beginning sewing class. It's usually less than $40.00 for 6 or 8 weeks.

self-help books are always helpful and useful.
try calling ur local craft stores, they usually have classes on just about everything and if they don't they maybe tell u where u can find some
another idea is , if u need to buy a machine, they give free lessons, at least singer always has.
good luck

I know that some fabric stores have sewing classes. Ask the ones in your area. I know hobby lobby has them sometimes. Good luck!
