it goes that way:
1 A3 = 2 A4
1 A2 = 4 A4
1 A1 = 8 A4

The scaling goes like this: A4 X 2 = A3 X 2 = A2 X 2 = A1 X2 = A0

Thus A1 has 8 times the area of A4.

I hate to disagree but the following are the sizes:

A1 594 × 841
A2 420 × 594
A3 297 × 420
A4 210 × 297

"Paper in the A series format has a 1:\sqrt{2} aspect ratio, although this is rounded to the nearest millimetre."

A4 is close to a quarter the size of A1 but there is a slight difference.
