Well, I'm sure it will remain on your previous employer's record for some time, so probably best not to rely on them for a reference. I think the key now is to find any sort of employment (even voluntary work) so that your most recent employer will be able to give you a positive reference - temping work is worth considering for this.
You may need to think of a 'political' way of explaining why you left the job you refer to, without lying!

This has happen to me before and it stays in the companies record for on average 5-7 years. However that doesn't really matter because they are not legally able to tell anyone why you were dismissed. They can however say that your not eligible for rehire which people can take to mean you got fired though.
Also if you by some chance get rehired where you once got fired your record starts fresh if that helps...

details:
they will keep a record on you for the purpose of having info on you should you choose to return.
example: I worked for a target store and quit after only 2 weeks.
3 years latter I wanted a part time job and tried target. I said on the ap that I never worked for target but after I got hired on they found my past record. I didnt get fired but the did still have it so I asked how long do they keep me on file and they said 7 years.
and thats just a store like target.

hi - well it does not really matter as the person is leaving the company the record will be held.
Companies now have to take care when preparing references for previous employees.
So dont worry just be honest with your new employer

The company will keep it until they have a clear out. As you have gone they are no longer really interested in you and they cannot give you a bad reference to another employer.

It won't be on any record they will disclose to anyone else. Employers will never say anything derogatory about an ex-employee, for legal reasons.

It won't be on any record. Ex employers are very careful to avoid saying anything negative about ex employees. If they do, they get sued.

If you need to send a true reflection of your work experience to a would be employer then obviously it will show up on your CV.
