What you do, is this: say you have something like 2x = 8.
This is a one step equation. You want to solve for x, so how will we get "x" alone? It's being multiplied, so we need to divide. so, 2x/2 = x. Now we have 'x = 8'. There is ONE very important rule for these equations:
Whatever you do to ONE side, you MUST do it to the other.
Since we dived 2x/2, we have to divide 8 by 2, so, 8/2 = 4. what we have now is x=4. Do the same thing in a division problem, except MULTIPLY to both sides.
If you're equation has adding, or subtracting, this is what you must do.
2x = 8 + 3 <--- There's our equation. The first step is to get rid of that 3. The three is positive, so we need to subract it. So,
3 - 3 = 0. Remember that rule? Whatever you do to ONE side, you MUST do it to the other. So, 8 - 3 = 5. Make sure you know where I'm getting these numbers. Now, our equation should look like this :
2x = 5
Now, we divide to isolate 'x' because it's being multiplied
2x/2 = x
Whatever you do to ONE side, you MUST do it to the other.
5/2 = 2.5
x = 2.5
And there you go. Remember that if there is subraction in the problem, like 2x = 8 - 3, you just add 3 to 3 and 8.
Hope I cleared things up for you! =)

It depends on what you want to find?
I will give an example anyway, I'll say we want to know how high it is to the top of a pole.
So well call that H.
We know how tall a man is I'll say 6' to keep things simple. this man stands in the shadow of the post cast on the ground, I'll say 4' from the tip. Now the feet from the post is measured, we'll say he is standing 10 feet away from the post. We add the 10 and 4 giving us 14 feet. Now we have a basic equation 6/4=H/14
We want to know what H is.
to solve this would look something like this.
H=6*14/4, H=21 the hight of the post is 21 feet.
The total equation including the previous math would be like this.
H=6*(10+4)/4
H=21

Example 1
2x + 6 = 18
Cover the 2x and ask what the number under must be such that when you add 6 to it the answer is 18.
This number is 12, thus:-
2x = 12
x = 6 (because 2 X 6 = 12)
Example 2
3x - 4 = 17
Cover the 3x and ask what number must be.
It must be 21.
3x = 21
x = 7 (because 3 X 7 = 21)
Hope these examples are helpful.

transform the equation to solve for x, then use the quadratic formula for a quadratic function or just reduce for a linear function.
