It's a newer modem, and it hasn't worked properly since we got it. The place we bought it at wouldn't do anything about it, because it seemed to function properly. It connects, but won't STAY connected. I've also called the internet company (several times), and tried other modems on our line. Other modems work GREAT, but not ours.
It's a wireless Netgear, model no. DG834GB.
Do I need to reconfigure? How do I do that?

I have the latest updates for hardware and software for the modem, and I've tried unplugging it and replugging it in, leaving at least a minute between.
I guess the only thing that's left is reinstalling?

I have had nothing but problems with Netgear products and will never buy another one. One of the big problems all Netgear probucts are facing is their compatability issues with Window XP prior to Service Pack 2.

From Netgear:
Wireless Connection Drops with Windows XP Service Pack 1
This problem is fixed in Windows Service Pack 2. Read this article if you are still using Service Pack 1.

If a wireless connection drops every three to five minutes, it may be caused by incorrect security settings. To avoid this problem, disable 802.1x authentication.

To Disable 802.1x Authentication

Click Start > Connect To > Show all connections, and then double-click your wireless network.
Click General > Properties.
Click the Wireless Networks tab.
Under Preferred Networks, click your home network and then click Properties.
Click Authentication, then clear the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network check box. (If you cannot click the check box, then you are not using 802.1x authentication or wireless security.)

If that doesn't work, take it back and get a different brand. Don't take "no" for an answer.

Reinstall the driver for the modem. You may have a cd for this, else download it from http://netgear.com. If that doesnt work the problem is without the modem.

You may also want to reinstall windows as some files may be corrupt and hence may not be allowing you to stay connected. Also make sure that the connection is set as your default connection and use an antivirus program to remove any viruses that may be disconnecting you from the internet.

Just listen to this. Take the modem back and tell them it is intermittant. That's the technical term for a electronic device that works sometimes, sometinmes doesn't. Tell them you want to exchange it for a different brand the does the same function because you don't trust Netgear any more. Be adament. Do not take no for an answer.

if you are on a wireless network , unplug the router and the modem for about 1 minute. replug back in . in about 1 minute the should reconfiger and you should be up and running. other wise call your internet service provider and ask for some help.
they would rather help you than you switching service providers.
