It all depends on attitude and circumstances. In my community, following decline of the industries that once gave local people a sense of purpose and contribution, many old people had got to feeling past their sell-by date and were presenting for mental health services. Only a few were still very active. By developing social and activity networks around the active folk, we have been able to give the others a new zest for life as, instead of sitting home feeling useless, they engaged with art classes, walks, green exercises and other outdoor activities, attended luncheon clubs where they met young people and wrote poetry. When an eighty year old blind man won the indoor curling against a range of others (including young people) the whole community saw it as evidence that life is what you are prepared to get out of it. Our old people are happier now and the money saved on mental health provision is paying for leisure activities.
