Its normally ok in the summer on older vehicles (per 1990) but on newer computer controlled cars it may damage the electronics.
If it get hotter in traffic it seems the flow of coolant is restricted so flush the system, hose down the fins on the radiator to remove any dirt/bugs & replace the thermo with a new one; the old one may have been bad & started all your problems. Thermos are there for a reason, the old school idea of removing them is a thing of the past.

Taking your thermostat out in summer will not hurt the car. You mention that it only runs hot in traffic as in idling? If so it is possible if you have an electronic fan, that it is not running or the temp switch which turns it on is not working. Put the hood up and let the car idle, when it gets hot if the fan does not kick in then that is the problem

Be sure to check that your Radiator is not clog. This will keep from the proper amount of Anti-frezz that cools the engine. Check your Water Pump or be sure that your Fan does come on when the car starts to get hot. Also Check your Fluids. Be sure to put your Thermostat in before winter. You should be good till then. Hope this helps. Thumbs Up?
